Machina Gadget Deck, Still Strong in 2013!

MeWelcome all! Today I’ve got a deck that combines the searching power of the Machina and Gadget cards with the consistent pressure created by Rank 7 monsters. This deck has many plays that leave the field with a large monster and allows the player to plus in the process. So let’s dive in and take a look at my Machina and Gadget Deck!

Traditional Traps Vs. Hand Traps

TragoediaSo the first thing you may notice is that the deck contains no trap line-up. As useful as traps are, in today’s meta-game they can be sitting ducks with so many cards with widespread destruction and negating effects. Even with both Heavy Storm and Giant Trunade being banned, I find that if you don’t fill your backrow with traps they can easily be picked off one by one.

So this deck utilizes hand traps (Maxx “c”, Tragoedia, and Gorz) to stop OTK’s and regain any card advantage lost on the opponent’s turn. Because of the pure advantage this deck can already make, Maxx “C” is an amazing addition allowing you to gain resources even on your opponents turn! Tragoedia and Gorz can save you from an OTK while setting up XYZ plays. Just remember you can’t use Gorz’s token, or any token for that matter, for an XYZ summon.

Mechanical Soldiers Lead Your Assault

Now let’s look at the monster choices. Before I discuss the Machina pieces I want to go through the 6 gadgets. I’ve always found 6 gadgets (two of each) to be more consistent then 9 gadgets (three of each).

In a perfect duel you only need to draw one gadget of any color to have access to all of the other ones. Therefore you just need enough to start with one in your opening hand. Since the gadgets themselves are a means to an end, only adding consistency by awarding a +1 for each summon you don’t want to lose precious deck space by adding 3 more pieces to a working engine.

Machina GearframeWe have a basic Machina Engine, consisting of 3 Gearframe, 3 Fortress, and 1 Cannon. Machina Gearframe can search either Fortress or Cannon upon his summon. Therefore summoning Machina Gearframe will net you a +1.

Gearframe is also a Union monster and once per turn can attach to a Machine-type monster and provide “union protection”. Notice he can equip to a MACHINE-type, not just MACHINA. This is critical as he can equip himself to the deadly Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack and add even more protection to it.

Next is Machina Fortress, and although he is level 7 and therefore can be considered a piece in creating a Rank 7 XYZ, we can still consider him a boss monster. Fortress can be easily special summoned from the hand or graveyard by discarding machine type monsters whose combined levels equal 8 or more.

What makes Fortress even better is that you can use the fortress you plan on summoning for the discard. This effectively makes Fortress summoning conditions in your hand to simply be any other machine-type monster (as even a level 1 plus Fortress’ own 7 will produce the eight needed).

Machina Fortress also has two effects which help curb the resource battle in your favor. The first ability triggers if Fortress is destroyed by battle. Upon being destroyed you can target 1 card your opponent controls and destroy it.

If your opponent attempts to target Fortress with a monster effect, he’s got something for that too! You can look at your opponents hand and discard 1 card to the graveyard. Aside from a few archetypes like Dark World, looking at your opponents hand and discarding a card is a huge advantage, even if you lose Fortress in the process.

Machina Cannon serves little purpose other than being Level 8 making it able to revive Fortress. However Machina Cannon, searchable by Gearframe, is also an EARTH attribute monster (as is most of the deck) making it food for the Dragon Ruler of Boulders.

Dragon Rulers Strike again!

RedoxRedox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders gives this deck so much versatility. For starters Redox allows you to double up on your gadget pluses. After you’ve summoned a Gadget and searched for the next, once it goes to the graveyard you can discard Redox and any other EARTH monster to revive the Gadget and search again. This play can easily lead into Rank 4 XYZ monsters such as Daigusto Emeral and Gear Gigant.

Our Dragon Ruler also opens up the Level 7 market. Being Level 7 itself you can easily special summon Redox, then special summon Fortress and XYZ summon Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack or Number 11: Big Eye. The playbook gets larger and larger as the game progresses and these XYZ plays begin to open up.

A True Duelist Masters Their Spells

The spell line-up is fairly standard for gadget builds. A lot of 1 for 1 instant fusionmonster removal in the form of Smashing Ground and Fissure. Spell and trap removal in Mystical Space Typhoon and Night Beam, and these cards are very important because this deck battles for field control while slowly gaining a huge lead on your opponent in resources.

Don’t be afraid to use Sacred Sword of Seven stars on Machina Fortress or Gorz, Emissary of Darkness. Although they are important monsters the deck can dig so quickly that more often then not giving up that monster for two more cards on the turn is much more useful.

One spell I do want to highlight is Instant Fusion. Instant Fusion allows you to XYZ summon as early as your first turn by summoning a Machina Gearframe or Gadget monster and then bringing out Karbanola Warrior from your extra deck.

This card also supports another play if you are holding Genex Ally Birdman. With the same cards as before rather than XYZ summoning you can return the Gearframe or Gadget to your hand to special summon Birdman. Now you can Synchro summon a level 7, supporting Rank 7 XYZ summons, as well as double up on the card you brought back to your hand. Remember the more resources the better!

Let’s Make This Deck Better!

This deck is pretty consistent with a myriad of interesting late game plays that allow you to push for game. But with your help it can be even better! Test it out! Build it and let me know how it works for you in a comment below! Thanks for visiting, I’ll see you next time!

  1. I have never played this card game before, but I can see that you definitely know your stuff here. I have been looking around at some card/deck building games. I played a little Magic before and my youngest is playing around with Pokémon. How would you compare this to Magic?

    1. Hi James, good to hear from you! I think Magic: The Gathering and Yu-Gi-Oh! have a lot more in common than most people think. The basic rules for Magic are a bit more complex than that of Yu-Gi-Oh! and for that reason most people think Magic takes more strategy.

But I don’t believe that is the case, I think both games require an intense amount of studying and strategy on the Duelists or Planeswalkers part to win. I also think that if you play one game you can easily understand the mechanics of the other. I personally feel Magic is a bit more evolved; there are so many cards to choose from one can really make any type of deck to suit their fancy, and because your plays are restricted to the mana you have each turn, makes for more versatility in the game.

However I also feel like Yu-Gi-Oh! was able to create a game that takes the same general concept Magic has, two combatants summoning monsters and slinging spells at each other in an attempt to reduce the opponent’s score to zero, and made something that children can easily understand as well.

The TV show certainly helps with that, since even the Magic: The gathering books are a bit advanced for children. Nevertheless both games are dominated on the competitive scale by adults, those 18 and up because of the mental capacity one must have in order to truly grasp either game.

That’s why I love Trading Card Games, because to me it’s like playing Chess but each player brings their own pieces that have unique moves. Consider trying out Yu-Gi-Oh! and if you still have your Magic cards I would consider playing a bit and learning some of the new cards. Maybe when your little one gets a little older they may inquire about other games and you can introduce them to Magic: The gathering! Thanks again for the visit, talk to you soon!
