Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon – Ace of the Deck

This deck is extremely capable at producing Rank 8 XYZ monsters. So along with using fun, iconic Galaxy-eyes photon dragonmonsters it also has some competitive plays. First we identify our powerful monsters and combos. As a Galaxy Deck we do run Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon who has an amazing effect to hinder opposing XYZ monsters.

Galaxy-Eyes has the convenient ability to special summon itself if you control two monsters with 2000 attack or more. Easiest way to do this is to special summon Photon Thrasher and normal summon Photon Crusher. But that uses three cards just to get Galaxy-Eyes on the field, and the archetype in itself lacks draw power so handling resources is imperative. As a result I only use two Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragons because drawing it is generally unnecessary since it’s so easy to special summon from the deck and graveyard.

In order to special summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon we’ve also got Galaxy Knight, Galaxy Expedition, Galaxy Zero, and Starliege Galaxion. These four cards allow you to bring out Galaxy-Eye’s Photon Dragon from either your deck or graveyard which facilitates rank 8 XYZ summons.

Battling Inconsistency

Unfortunately the Galaxy/Photon Archetype does not feature very much search or draw power and the few cards that do allow the deck to search for integral pieces are mediocre at best. Photon Lizard can be tributed to search for a photon monster from your deck, but that requires using your normal summon to summon photon lizard, and even then the only Photon monsters you need to search for are Photon Thrasher and Crusher which are both Reinforcement of the Army targets.

Galaxy WizardThe Galaxy monsters have Galaxy Wizard which allows you to search for any Galaxy Card, useful especially since it allows you to search for spell and traps as well. However like Lizard it must be tributed which generally will take your normal summon. As a result Galaxy Wizard is only useful to search for the last piece of a combo, such as a Galaxy Knight when you’re holding Photon Thrasher.

Trade-In is most people’s option for draw power, but I quickly realized it hindered more than helped. You need Galaxy Knight, Guardian of Order, and Swordsman of Revealing Light in your hand in order to use them. Therefore the only target for Trade-In that doesn’t slow your initial strategy down is Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, which can be easily summoned if drawn.

As a result the deck has no real draw power. That’s why the deck has three Cardcar D. Cardcar D is a phenomenal opening for this deck simply due to the slow play style it uses. The deck is very reactive meaning it is generally more effective to allow your opponent to attempt a powerful play, stop it with your trap suite, then proceed to advance with your XYZ monsters, as I’ll explain more below. Long story short opening with Cardcar D and a couple of traps can set up your hand for future combos while still threatening to stop your opponent.

Pot of Dichotomy is another tech card allowing you to draw extra cards. Suited for Mid to Late games but still useful simply because of all of the different types the deck uses. Galaxy Knight is Warrior, Photon Dragon is Dragon, Cardcar D is Machine, Galaxy Wizard is Spellcaster not to mention the plethora of XYZ monsters that can be made. Sacrificing the Battle Phase is generally not an option when you are fueling other Felgrand or Giant Grinder plays.

Opening the Playbook, Galaxy/Photon Combos

The Galaxy and Photon monsters specialize in accelerating Rank 4 and Rank 8 XYZ monsters. Therefore your main offensive plays will be XYZ summoning, so the members of your extra deck are important. Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand, Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon, and Gimmick Puppet Giant Grinder will often see play in just about every game.

Swordsman of Revealing LightGalaxy Wizard + Galaxy Expedition – Earlier I spoke about Wizards ability to search for Galaxy Cards, namely Galaxy Expedition. However if you are holding both cards then congratulations, you have an easy Rank 8! Galaxy Wizard can increase it’s level by four immediately making Galaxy Expedition live. From there you can Expedition into Knight or Photon Dragon. This play is the bread and butter so if you’re holding two Wizards use one to search for Expedition, setting yourself up for the next turn.

Swordsman of Revealing Light + Guardian of Order + Honest – This is a dangerous play. The only problem is it requires three specific cards to execute and this is why the Galaxy deck is so inconsistent. However if you are holding these three cards you’ve got power. When your opponent attacks you can special summon Swordsman destroying their monster. Be careful not to summon Swordsman on a monster with 2500 or more attack as it will be able to replay the attack and destroy Swordsman. For this to work Swordsman must survive until your turn.

On your turn normal summon Honest. Now that you have two LIGHT Monsters you can special summon Guardian of Order. Here’s the important part, return Honest to your hand, then XYZ summon Divine Dragon Knight Felgrand. As a result you’ll have a monster that cannot be destroyed by battle once, can negate two monster abilities, and has Honest in hand to protect it from anything else!

Swordsman of Revealing Light + Galaxy Wizard – Very similar to the above play after summoning Swordsman you can simply summon Galaxy Wizard and increase it’s level allowing you to XYZ summon any rank 8 that will be protected from battle once. If you have Guardian of Order as well you can do the same play as above with Honest and either make a Rank 8 that requires 3 monsters, or search for a Galaxy monster with Wizard and still XYZ summon a Rank 8 with Guardian of Order and Swordsman of Revealing Light.

Starliege Lord GalaxionGalaxy Knight + Photon Thrasher – This may be the most obvious play of the Galaxy archetype and one Duelists were excited to use when the archetype first came out. Special summon Photon thrasher then normal summon Galaxy Knight without a tribute. Galaxy Knight can then summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon from the grave making an immediate Rank 8. The weakness in this play is that it requires two specific cards in hand, AND Galaxy-Eyes in the grave. Without Galaxy-Eyes in the Grave Galaxy Knight has very little use.

Photon Thrasher + Photon Crusher + Galaxy Expedition – Again another three card play but this one nets in two XYZ monsters. After summoning both Thrasher and Crusher you can XYZ summon Starliege Lord Galaxion. Galaxion can then summon Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon from the hand or deck. Now that you have a Level 8 Galaxy monster, your Galaxy Expedition is live allowing you to summon another Galaxy-Eyes or a Galaxy Knight.

At the End of the play you have a Rank 8 XYZ monster and a Starliege Lord Galaxion ready to summon another Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon should it survive to your next turn.

Let’s Make This Deck Better!

Galaxy/Photon is a fun archetype that can certainly lead to some explosive plays. What’s important with this deck is to control resources and ensure your opponent never gets the upper-hand because if they begin gaining too many cards you can easily fall behind. What do you think? How do you use Galaxy/Photon Monsters? Comment below and thanks for reading!

  1. Very good list!
I’m a fan of Galaxy/photon, i’m working on them since when did come. Now i’m concentrating on a list with the ocg cards, but this is very good, meaby -1 galaxy expedition +1 galaxy zero
And i want to try Galaxy Cyclone!
    W GALAXY!!!!!!!!

    1. Gorz would allow a dark for potential BLS plays, however it is level seven while swordsman is level 8 for rank 8 plays!

  2. I love the Galaxy-Photon deck. I have it on my Android YuGiOh! Duel Generation game but there are some cards this deck doesn’t have that most Galaxy-Photon decks have. Regardless of the downside, this deck is beyond anything I’ve ever used. It even beats my Nordic Gods deck. The strategy I always have to remember is to try and find the fastest way possible to summon all the Galaxy-Eyes Xyz Number and Neo monster cards but not to early in the game.

This is probably my favorite deck of all time. And it made Kite my favorite character!

  3. Im an asian and we’re using ocgs here but for what i know the other support cards are finally released there in tcg.. This is also my main deck and ill give u my own list for some ideas..

    Monsters: 18
    3x gepd
    2x g. Knight
    3x wizard
3x g. Soldier(new card that support rank 5 plays and some combos)
2x cloudragon(ur ancient rules and silver’s cry for galaxy eyes monsters)
1x guardian of order(2 is cloggy)
    1x swordsman of revealing light
1x BLS(use ur dark attribute xyz to summon this; no.15, dark matter, etc)
    Or
1x honest(if u dont like bls; 1 is fine coz the monsters have enough high atk power, also it doesnt help for the combos)

    Spells: 15
    3x expedition
    2x g. Zero
    2x trade in(3 clogs)
    2x lance( for protection)
    2x mst
    1x accelight
1x rank up magic seventh one(saves u in tight situation if u draw it)
    1x soul charge
1x raigeki(it’s ban in ocg, but it’s limited in tcg)
(U dont need photon sanctuary, its a slow card, also it has restrictions)

    Traps: 7
    2x fiendish
    1x coth
1x mirror force(just in case ur opponent swarms too much)
    1x bottomless
    1x compulse
    1x solemn warning

    Extra deck:

    1x neo tachyon
2x dark matter(or 1 also fine, use 1 paladynamo in exchange for the other)
    1x neo photon
    1x full armor photon
    2x number 62
    2x number 107
    2x felgrand
    1x number 15
    2x pleiades
1x evilswarm exciton(ur getaway in tight situation; use thrasher and wizard)

I recommend bls to u coz the dark xyzs(dark matter and number 15) are not hard to summon.. In ocg, monster reborn is legal(i use mirror force for u as alternative) and in the extra we have number 23(rank 8 dark attribute; target for bls).. I also use cyber dragon infinity(g. soldier as material for nova; i replace it w/ pleiades for u) coz this deck does really abuse that monster and if good enough even tier 1 deck doesnt stand a chance..

    1. Thank you so much for your response! This is a great list I will definitely test it out and upgrade this deck now that we have more cards in the TCG! Thanks again if you have any ideas for any of the other decks on the site be sure to leave them as well!

  5. Holy cow!! This deck is sicker than any other deck i’ve touched in my entire life….I beat a really good friend of mine, thrice in a row, once with a red-eyes deck, but the other two times with this galaxy-god-eyes deck. I summoned neo-photon galaxy-eyes, i think, in both the Matches, and galaxy-eyes photon dragon, and i beat my opponent in a few turns! the first match, i won in my second turn, and in the second, like my tenth or fifteenth turn!

    OVERALL:
I love u for making this deck!!!!

    Traps
    2 tachyon transmigration
    2 mirror force
    2 call of the haunted
    2 fiendish chain
    1 tachyon chaos hole

  7. Awsome tips! Im working to build a powerful arsenal on my Galaxy Eyes deck on Yugioh Duel Generation Android version. However, im going to test out ur suggested cards. I think it will workout immensely!

    1. Yes you can actually use up to three of a single card in a deck as long as it is not Limited or Forbidden. Limited cards you can only use two, while Forbidden cards you can only use one.

    1. maybe add number 39: utopia beyond and two Rank-up Magic astral force.
Utopia beyond is rank 6 and the rank up magic summons a rank8 with utopia beyond and its materials as materials.

  8. i want to know if you can give e advice for what cards to change in the deck
