Magic the Gathering: Kaladesh!

Hello Planeswalkers! Today we take a look at Magic the Gatherings newest expansion, Kaladesh! Kaladesh is a placeĀ of invention bringing forth the best tinkerers from around the land to show off their amazing creations! Kaladesh is the home plane of the fiery Chandra Nalaar so you can bet exploring it will be a blast! Lets check out what’s new in Kaladesh!

Kaladesh is all about innovation and invention. So it’s not a surprise that the set came with a couple of new game mechanics while placing a large emphasis on artifacts. There are two new types of cards along with a new source of power that you can utilize in your duels!

Vehicles and Pilots

fleetwheel-cruiserVehicles are a new type of artifact card. Each Vehicle has a crew number and you must tap a creature or creature’s with a power greater than the crew number to board the vehicle. Once on board the vehicle turns from an artifact to an artifact creature and can act as a creature for the rest of the turn. Untapped creatures can board their vehicles on either players turn which is a useful tool to attack or block without actually using your creatures.

Pilots are a new creature type that synergize with vehicles. Pilots have an added effect that activates when they board a vehicle. Try to get your vehicles out first then play your pilots because creatures can board vehicles the turn that they are played!

Energy

consulate-surveillanceAether. The pure energy source that fuels Kaladesh and it’s creations. And now you can harness it! Many creatures, artifacts, and enchantments will allow you to use Aether by giving you energy points. Like mana, energy is conserved in a pool, so it’s not a mechanic that fizzles if a permanent leaves play. However unlike mana you will not lose any energy at the end of your turn.

Energy can be used to create huge tokens or give other permanents an added ability. Most permanents that award you energy also have a second effect to use the energy so be sure to read your cards carefully and combine energy-fueling cards for maximum advantage! Also like mana energy can be used on your opponents turn which adds another level of strategy and manipulation to the game.

  1. This looks pretty cool. I admit I’m not a Magic the Gathering player, but I do know a few people who are. If they keep coming out with expansions like these, I might have to join them at some point.

The artwork on the cards looks amazingly attentive to detail to me, but I guess that’s just the usual standard for Magic the Gathering. I also liked your detailed but simple breakdown of new features like vehicles, and of how players can combine energy cards for best effect.

I just have one question. There were a few times in the first paragraph when you wrote “Kaladesh” as “Kaldesh”, which had me a bit confused. Is “Kaldesh” the name of Chandra Nalaar’s home, or just a typo?

Either way, this is a very nicely put together summary of Magic the Gathering’s latest expansion. Well done.

    1. Thank you so much for comment Andrew! Magic the Gathering is one of my favorite card games, when I was younger I played pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! much more but now in my twenties Magic has quickly become my favorite.

As you stated the artwork of these cards is just amazing, the attention to detail is second to none for a trading card game.

Lastly thank you for catching those typos! It’s always good to have a second set of eyes! Thanks again for commenting, hope to see you again soon!

  2. OMG! I haven’t played Magic the Gathering since it first came out, so this post is kind of nostalgic for me. Makes we want to dig into the deepest recesses of my closet of mystery and dust off the old decks. lol. How do you feel that these latest expansions, particularly this latest one, mesh with some of the older foundational cards, from a balance perspective?

  3. Now this is what I’m talking about. I used to play Magic a lot when I was younger. I even got all my friends into it and we’d play all night.

I haven’t played lately, but looking at these new beautiful cards has the nostalgia going big time!

The mechanic of vehicles is a pretty interesting one. I like it a lot. Although it would probably suck to go against it.

Are you using any of these featured cards in one of your decks?
